Barcus Wroot

“Farewell. If we will meet again... well, then we will have met again.„
Overview[edit | edit source]
Barcus Wroot is a deep gnome who lived in the Underdark with his good friend, Wulbren Bongle. Wulbren and Barcus eventually left, Wulbren to places unknown and Barcus to the city of Baldur's Gate. While in the city, Barcus found a bloodied amulet that he gave Wulbren before he left, compelling him to return to the Underdark in search of Wulbren.
Involvement[edit | edit source]
Act One[edit | edit source]
Barcus can be found in the Blighted Village. He is tied to a windmill and harassed by a group of goblins led by Fezzerk. If the goblins are defeated or convinced to leave, Barcus demands to be untied. To rescue Barcus, the party must pull the Brake lever inside the windmill. Pulling the Release lever shoots Barcus through the sky, with (predictably) fatal results.[2]
If rescued, depending on the Race of the party member talking to him, Barcus surrenders himself as a slave or asks the party what he can give them as a reward. He explains that he is looking for a missing friend, and takes his leave. Party members with the background also gain the inspiration.
If leaving the Wilderness map before resolving the situation at the windmill, Barcus can be found dead in the Blighted Village, as if the Release lever was used.
If Barcus survives his predicament, he can be met again at Grymforge, being enslaved by duergar led by Nere. If freed again, he tells the party he is looking for his friend Wulbren, who was taken to Moonrise Towers. Barcus can be convinced to join the Camp as a Camp Follower on the way to Moonrise Towers.
If Barcus is in camp for the celebration after the liberation of the Emerald Grove (i.e., if the three goblin leaders are killed after rescuing Barcus from both the windmill and Grymforge), he can be persuaded to reluctantly set off some fireworks for the celebration.
Act Two[edit | edit source]
If Barcus is saved in Grymforge, he can be found in the Last Light Inn. He is a Trader selling the following items:
Upon completing Brilliant Retort.
Act Three[edit | edit source]
Barcus can be encountered with the rest of the Ironhand Gnomes in Angleiron's Cellar. He asks the party to not help Wulbren and to spare the Gondians.
Later, if Zanner Toobin and any other surviving Gondians are successfully freed from the Steel Watch Foundry, Barcus can be persuaded to lead the Ironhand Gnomes instead of Wulbren. If the check is passed, he is recruited for and grants all companions the action during the fight against the the Netherbrain.[3]

Notes[edit | edit source]
- ↑ As the game progresses, the party can discover Barcus has romantic feelings for Wulbren, but these feelings are not reciprocated. They can also learn that Barcus has very different ideas about how the Ironhand Gnomes should be handling Wulbren's rediscovery of the long lost formula to make runepowder, a fabled explosive of tremendous power.
- ↑ Barcus' death from pulling the release leaver is scripted; the Feather Fall effect does not prevent his death when flung off the windmill.
- ↑ If attempting to stealthily kill Wulbren or any other gnome within his range of vision, Barcus always becomes hostile despite having exiled Wulbren in his first action as a leader, which results in removing the Ironhand Gnomes from .
