Underdark

“Ah, cries for help... I must be home.„
Overview[edit | edit source]
The Underdark in Baldur's Gate 3 is only a small portion of the true Underdark. The Drow, Duergar and Deep Gnomes are native to the Underdark.
Locations[edit | edit source]
Adjacent regions[edit | edit source]
Regional Waypoints[edit | edit source]
The following Waypoints are available within the Underdark.
Access[edit | edit source]
Due to its immense size, there are multiple access points into the Underdark from over-land. All of them involve travelling (or falling) deep into the depths of the world.
The following are known options to access the Underdark:
- Climbing down a ladder from the Defiled Temple, arriving in the Selunite Outpost
- Using an elevator from the Zhentarim Hideout, arriving in the far end of the Storehouse
- Using a Mushroom Circle in the Overgrown Tunnel to a corresponding circle above the Torchstalk gulch
- Jumping into the hole in the Whispering Depths, arriving in the Minotaur Hills; must be used, or a cutscene shows the party falling to death.
Areas[edit | edit source]
Arcane Tower[edit | edit source]
The Arcane Tower occupies the south-west corner of the Underdark region. This area is accessible through a neatly built stone entryway which opens to a front garden featuring several Arcane Cannons. Stains of scorched earth may warn the party members of the danger ahead. The cannons can be destroyed or disabled using the flowers of the Sussur Tree from the Dread Hollow (see below; the latter way grants the inspiration event for party members with the background).
In the front garden several Bronze Ingots can be looted, as well as undelivered letter from the tower hostess Lenore de Hurst to her beloved
Yrre the Sparkstruck.
The tower is forsaken and uninhabited, save for guarding mechanisms and creatures. Its powerbase is deactivated, too, and the party have to solve this riddle in order to explore the building thoroughly. Activating the tower earns the inspiration event for party members with the background.
The area just in front of the tower garden entrance features dark brown soil and spots of Torchstalks, as well as several deep burrow holes; DC 15 Nature check helps to recognize the latter as the traces of a Bulette, but the beast never appears in this area. The southern cliff of this gulch features several giant mushroom caps, growing on a rock to resemble a makeshift ladder. Some of these, however, are mere illusions (
DC 10 Investigation check to dispel each illusional "step"). The corpse of a Dead Drow scout at the foot of the cliff is a victim of an unexpected fall (
DC 10 Medicine check to apprehend his wounds). It can be spoken to with .
"Upstairs" the party can find an illusional wall, same as they encountered in the Overgrown Tunnel. A DC 20 Investigation check is required to detect it, but the wall can be walked through even in case of fail. A mushroom circle beyond it at X: 98 Y: -283 leads into the hag's domain. Another circle at the cliff top transports the whole party down. This is one of the points of gaining access to the Underdark, but it is locked if the hag is dead or has already fled her swamp.
Festering Cove[edit | edit source]
Just aside the illusional mushrooms' wall there is a rift half-concealed with a waterfall. Climbing down the Cragged Rock on its opposite side X: 80 Y: -241, the party can reach the Festering Cove. It is a hidden location containing a pack of Kuo-toa, led by their priest Pooldripp in worshipping their god BOOOAL.
Decrepit Village[edit | edit source]
The Decrepit Village is the central area of the Underdark, gradually, but markedly descending from the average level of the region. It visually consists of two levels, with ramshackle wooden structures on the upper one, and rope nettings leading down to the sandy beach of the Ebonlake with two berths.
The path leading to the village entrance is strewn with the bodies of dead Myconids and Duergar, and the village and its surroundings - with both Duergar and Deep Gnomes corpses.
When first approaching the Decrepit village, a DC 20 Perception check can help to detect an ambush of several Duergar warriors led by Gekh Coal. They are searching for Thulla, but will attack the party, too, if they are not placated through options of automatically started dialogue. The party may also promise to help Gekh, but if they attack his squad afterwards, it is considered an Oathbreaking Action for characters.
Down on the beach, a skiff rests at one dock, ready to take the party to Grymforge based on the story path of their choosing. However, it cannot be used until the party somehow deals with Gekh Coal and his squad.
In one of the shackles a journal belonging to Wulbren Bongle can be found, asserting his presence in the Underdark and the probability of his being captured by the Duergar.
On the opposite to the Duergar's ambush side of the village, at X: 30 Y: -238 a Carrion crawler nest can be found, resembling a bunch of holes in a steep rocky slope. Several of them are interactable, and recognizing what is what requires a
DC 15 Survival check. Regardless of the result, the player character may also reach into any of holes (to no avail). If playing as / as a Short-height character (i.e. , or ), another passive
DC 15 Survival check is rolled. Successful second check earns the inspiration event for party members with the background and a random precious gem.
Dread Hollow[edit | edit source]
This area occupies western and north-western quadrants of the Underdark region. The Dread Hollow actually forms a ring-like territory around a chasm, with a large and brightly shining Sussur Tree growing in it. In the western corner a cave on a rocky cliff can be found, where a mad wizard Filro the Forgotten has made his haven. He becomes hostile to the party on sight, as well as several Hook Horrors roaming around. Speaking to Filro's corpse afterwards or successful examining Tattered Scroll looted from him may start the , if it has not been started already, or progress it.
If climbing onto a branch of the Sussur Tree at X: -14 Y: -138, the party can obtain a piece of Sussur Tree Bark, which is necessary to complete the quest. Also, the flowers of this tree block caster characters from using any spells and cantrips, instilling the onto any character who comes close to the blooms or carries a fresh flower in the inventory.
The eastern part of the Dread Hollow is one of areas where a Bulette can be encountered. Also, at X: -41 Y: -209 here lies the tombstone of Myrna, a pet dog of Lenore de Hurst.
To the north-east from the Sussur Tree is a vast cave overgrown densely with dangerous Bibberbang mushrooms with highly flammable spores. Baelen Bonecloak is trapped among their stalks: he fell there from the stone perch engirdling the cave inside, holding a burning torch. The player character must decide whether to help Baelen or not, and also may try to collect a valuable Noblestalk mushroom, which grows in the far end of the cave and can easily be destroyed if even a single Bibberbang stalk is triggered to explode.
Helping Baelen to escape earns the inspiration event for party members with the background. The Noblestalk, if successfully collected, can be used by Shadowheart or the Dark Urge to recover some lost memories from their past, and grants the inspiration event for party members with the background.
Ebonlake Grotto[edit | edit source]
This is the northern part of the region, most of it occupied by the Myconid colony. Several twisted alleys within it are side-lined by oversized mushrooms, with myconid guards and spore-animated corpses walking back and forth. Along the paths Barrelstalks grow, issuing clouds of spores in the air. Passing through such clouds instills on any character for one turn.
In the colony, the party can meet several notable non-player characters: the colony leader Sovereign Spaw, traders Blurg and Derryth Bonecloak, Thulla the deep gnome, as well as illithid Omeluum, who can advance the quest and act as a merchant, too. Hidden in a cave behind the magical vines, a corpse of a drow wizard Xargrim lays. Investigating it starts the (if not started already), or progresses it.
The Ebonlake Grotto can be entered at two points: X: 113 Y: -127 ("main entrance" to its south-east, resembling a rocky ladder and guarded by several Myconids) and X: 34 Y: -123 (with yet another guarded mushroom "ladder") leading to the Dread Hollow. Between the two entrances stands Glut - a myconid sovereign of a extinguished circle, who plans to use the party as a means to kill two birds with one stone: taking vengeance upon the Duergar for murdering his subjects and supporting his coup against Spaw for refusing to intervene while the slaughter of his subjects happened.
The area in front of the first entrance is full of dangerous mushrooms - Timmasks alternated with Torchstalks. Together these species form a dangerous combination, as triggering or destroying any of Torchstalks starts a chain reaction of explosions. Destroying a single specimen from every type of dangerous mushrooms in Underdark (these two and also a Bibberbang) earns the inspiration event for party members with the background. A westward path from the dangerous area leads to the Decrepit Village.
The narrow rocky cliff right beyond the mushroom field at X: 126 Y: -159 is one of areas where a Bulette can be encountered.
At X: 43 Y: -141 the player character may reach the giant bird's nest by series of jumps. Looting the wooden chest inside the nest grants the inspiration event for party members with the background.
Grymforge[edit | edit source]
Grymforge is an expansive and abandoned settlement on a separate map, including the Adamantine Forge. It can be reached for the first time via the skiff from the Decrepit Village beach. Recently it has been found anew by the Duergar Clan Flameshade. Some members of the clan have also been swayed to the cause of the Absolute by Ketheric Thorm's retainer, drow Nere, while others remained unconcerned. The player character may settle the conflict between two parts of the clan to their avail or oppose them both. Also, they must resolve the fate of several Deep Gnomes, enslaved by the Duergar. Finally, the party can gain access to the ancient Forge and craft an armour or weapon piece of a Very Rare grade.
From Grymforge the party can travel into the regions belonging to Act Two of the game.
Selûnite Outpost and Petrified Battlefield[edit | edit source]
The Selûnite Outpost is located in the south-east corner of the Underdark region. It resembles a small fortress with ramparts and portcullis, but looks abandoned long time ago. However, the magical defence remains functional. A statue of Selûne holds up a bright Moonstone, which channels energy to the two lesser statues just behind the gate to blast any approaching enemy. If any party member comes close to the raised portcullis, one of Minotaurs wandering near the Storehouse runs to attack them and feels the full impact of its
Radiant damage. Shattering the moonstone grants the inspiration to party members with the background. By the feet of the statue a tome titled
In Search of the Nightsong lies; reading it progresses the quest.
The Outpost is another possible point of accessing the Underdark. It can be reached descending from the Shattered Sanctum.
By several diaries and documents found around the outpost, as well as scattered wooden barricades and weapons left, it may be concluded that Selûnite devotees tried to establish a foothold in the Underdark, but their endeavour demanded an ever-growing amount of resources from over-world and finally failed due to hostility of local inhabitants (drow, according to diaries, but probably not only them), and also lead to the decline of the temple above.
The surroundings of the outpost is one of areas where a Bulette can be encountered.
The high cliff at X: 116 Y: -192 features the remains of a ritual revering the goddess . Using various checks, the player character can take the Phalar Aluve from its stone cradle, which earns the inspiration to party members with the background.
The area to the west of the outpost, accessible through the ruined window section, is remarkable by several Drow and numerous glowing gems. When the party approach it, a cutscene starts, ending in the source of petrification revealing itself - a Spectator. After the battle with it is resolved, one of the formerly petrified drow, the wizard Dhourn (or his corpse), can be spoken with to start the (if not started already), or to progress it. Otherwise, the player character may try to use the Memory Shard looted from Dhourn.
On a cliff behind several layers of spider webs at X: 84 Y: -207, the party can find a long-forgotten stash of Lolth-Sworn Drow. From a locked chest the party can loot Drow Studded Leather Armour, and read the
On Educating the Faithful tome by matron Tarrae of Menzoberranzan on the stone "desk" nearby, which earns the inspiration to party members with the background.
Storehouse and Minotaur Hills[edit | edit source]
The north-eastern quadrant of the Underdark consists of the Storehouse - a named area recognisable for its aging pale wooden interior crammed with various containers, and Minotaur Hills (unnamed area), featuring bright green grass and whimsical red mushrooms with swirling paths. The Storehouse is divided from the Minotaur Hills by the rope netting. The ground at the foot of the netting is trapped with Blast Mines, and triggering them may destroy the netting. However, it is possible to climb up through a series of jumps onto giant mushroom caps growing aside.
This quadrant has two points where the party can enter the Underdark region. An elevator leads from the over-world's Zhentarim Hideout into the Storehouse. Also, if the party jumps into the hollow within the Whispering Depths (using means like to avoid immediate death), they land at X: 140 Y: -150, on the fringes of the Minotaur Hills. Entering the Underdark this way grants the inspiration to party members with the background.
The Storehouse can be looted for a large amount of Valuables, alchemical resources, Camp Supplies and common weapons. If reached from the other part of the Underdark, any party member can recognize the symbols on the crates as belonging to Zhentarim (if entering the region through the elevator from the Zhentarim Hideout, the check is not rolled).
The Storehouse is free of any enemies, while the Hills, as per name, feature three wandering Minotaurs, which turn hostile on sight (one of them may attack the Selûnite Outpost gate and be burned to death by Moonstone rays). Neither area has interactable neutral or allied NPCs.
Most part of the area (all the way to the Selûnite Outpost) is considered as demesne by the Myconids of the nearby Ebonlake Grotto colony, seen as purplish speckles in the air. When first entering its boundaries, the party feel the effect of and are engaged into the dialogue with myconids (warning them of Minotaurs) through it. A successful DC 14 Nature check helps to detect the spores, and any party member comments on it regardless of result.
