Similar to Potions, Elixirs are consumable items that can be drunk as a bonus action to apply a variety of beneficial effects. Unlike Potions, the effects of an Elixir last until either taking a long rest or drinking another Elixir. Many Elixirs can be created with Alchemy.
A character can only benefit from the effects of one elixir at a time: drinking an elixir immediately cancels any active effects of a previously drunk elixir.
Other activities can cause elixir benefits to end, including:
- Praying at the Altar to Shar in the Gauntlet of Shar

List of Elixirs
The level requirements for buying Elixirs are as follows:
- Level 1: All the uncommon elixirs (green ones), Elixirs of Psychic Resistance, and Elixir of Universal Resistance (that is, Elixir of Arcane Cultivation, Greater Elixir of Arcane Cultivation, Elixir of Barkskin, Elixir of Bloodlust, Elixir of Darkvision, Elixir of Fire Resistance, Elixir of Hill Giant Strength, Elixir of Heroism, Elixir of Lightning Resistance, Elixir of Peerless Focus, Elixir of Poison Resistance, Elixir of the Colossus, Elixir of Vigilance, Elixirs of Psychic Resistance, and Elixir of Universal Resistance). Elixir of Universal Resistance is only availabe on Skittle and Vicar Humbletoes. Vicar Humbletoes also sells Elixir of Necrotic Resistance for level 1 characters while other traders require level 6.
- Level 6: All the rare elixirs (blue ones) except for the Elixir of Cloud Giant Strength and Tadpole Elixir (that is, Elixir of Battlemage's Power, Elixir of Guileful Movement, Elixir of Necrotic Resistance, Elixir of See Invisibility, Elixir of Viciousness, and Superior Elixir of Arcane Cultivation)
- Level 9: Elixir of Radiant Resistance, Elixir of Cloud Giant Strength, and Supreme Elixir of Arcane Cultivation
- Cannot be bought: Elixir of Acid Resistance, Elixir of Cold Resistance, Elixir of Force Resistance, Elixir of Thunder Resistance, and Tadpole Elixir
Unique Elixirs
These elixirs cannot be crafted and are not sold by normal merchants. They can only be obtained by giving blood samples to Araj Oblodra, and each party member can only do this once, so the number available is limited. These elixirs apparently do not replace regular elixirs when drunk, nor do they replace elixirs from the blood of different races. [Needs Verification]
Other
The following items are called Elixirs, but function more similary to Potions.
Turn Based Duration
Terminology Note
In-game, "Potion" is used as a general category of liquid consumables that includes the more specific categories of Potions, Coatings and Elixirs, which are highlighted in tooltips. Only consumables labelled as "elixirs" follow the specific rules mentioned above.
In the tabletop game, "elixir" is just a word used to name particularly powerful potions, and a few potions in Baldur's Gate 3 follow this convention despite functioning as regular potions. These "false elixirs" are included in the Potions page.
Notes
- ↑ At least as of Patch 7, the tooltip for Cloud Giant (but not Hill Giant) Strength says "This elixir can be thrown at at target to apply its effects."
- ↑ At least as of Patch 7, the tooltip for Cloud Giant (but not Hill Giant) Strength says "This elixir can be thrown at at target to apply its effects."
- ↑ Duergar will also get this elixir, as they are a dwarven subrace.
- ↑ Drow will also get this elixir, as they were once an elven subrace.
