The Selûnite Outpost is a Location within the Underdark in Act One of Baldur's Gate 3. It is located in the south eastern part of the Underdark and can also be reached from the Defiled Temple.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The Selûnite Outpost is located in the south-east corner of the Underdark region. It resembles a small fortress with ramparts and a portcullis. Behind it, scattered wooden barricades and long-dead skeletons of ancient fighters.

Outpost[edit | edit source]

The guardian mechanism of the Selûnite Outpost.

The Outpost is a possible point of accessing the Underdark. It can be reached descending from the Shattered Sanctum. It is not possible to enter the Defiled Temple via the outpost if the path has not been already opened from the other side. Thus, this route cannot be used to infiltrate the Goblin Camp.

Long since abandoned, the outpost's stones walls are crumbling and its blue Selûne Selûne banners have long since tattered. Despite this, its magical defences remain functional. A statue of Selûne Selûne holds up a staff with a bright Moonstone, which channels energy into two statues on either side of the gate; they shoot blasts at any creature approaching or exiting there. These attacks are called Moonlight Artillery, and they deal 2d6Damage TypesRadiant damage in a radius of 4 m / 13 ft with Dexterity saving throw against DC 12 to halve the damage. They can only target creatures between the portcullis and the closer one of the two big rocks that lie on the last steps of the stone bridge.

If any party member comes close to the raised portcullis, one of the Minotaurs wandering near the Storehouse runs to attack them and gets the full impact of its Damage TypesRadiant damage. Destroying the moonstone grants the Shatter the Moon Shatter the Moon inspiration to party members with the Acolyte Acolyte background. By the feet of the statue a tome titled In Search of the Nightsong lies; reading it progresses the Find the Nightsong Find the Nightsong quest.

At X: 163 Y: -244 a Helmet of Smiting lies in a locked chest. Nearby, a movable wall section can be detected with a DC 15 Perception check. Behind it, in a locked and trapped chest, is Luminous Armour. If no party members passes the Perception check, the hidden section of the outpost may be reached by jumping up through the wall breach from the adjacent room.

By several diaries and documents found inside and around the outpost, as well as scattered wooden barricades and weapons left, it may be concluded that Selûnite devotees tried to establish a foothold in the Underdark, but their endeavour demanded an ever-growing amount of resources from over-world and finally failed due to hostility of local inhabitants (the drow, according to diaries, but probably not only them), and also lead to the decline of the temple above.

The surroundings of the outpost is one of the areas where a Bulette Bulette can be encountered.

Approaching the barricades in front of the entrance to the outpost, the party may feel an earthquake. It does no harm, but a random party member comments on it.

Petrified battlefield[edit | edit source]

To the west of the outpost, this nameless area contains several petrified drow. Entering this area unhidden triggers a fight with a Spectator Spectator. The area to the west of the outpost, accessible through the ruined window section, is remarkable by several Petrified Petrified Drow and numerous glowing gems. When the party approach it, a cutscene starts, ending in the source of petrification, a Spectator, revealing itself. During the fight, the monster may unpetrify some of them (starting with the group's leader Dhourn Dhourn) with its Unpetrification Ray Unpetrification Ray, and at the same time confuse confuse them until they take damage. The drow can also be restored with Basilisk Oil (a successful restoration also enacts the cutscene).

After the battle with the Spectator is resolved, one of the formerly petrified drow, the wizard Dhourn (or his corpse), can be spoken with to start the Adamantine Forge (quest) Adamantine Forge (quest) (if not started already), or progress it. Otherwise, the player character can try to use the Memory Shard looted from Dhourn. If the player character is a Drow Drow themselves (or disguised disguised as such), more so a female Drow, they have unique dialogue options when speaking with Dhourn, if he survived, to make him abandon the search for Adamantine Forge. Humiliating the wizard this way grants the Know Your Place Know Your Place inspirational event to the characters with Noble Noble background.

Drow sword and armour[edit | edit source]

The high cliff at X: 116 Y: -192 features the remains of a ritual revering the goddess Eilistraee Eilistraee. Using various checks, the player character can take Phalar Aluve from its stone cradle, which earns the Last Rites of the Dark Dancer Last Rites of the Dark Dancer inspiration to party members with the Acolyte Acolyte background.

On a cliff behind several layers of spider webs at X: 84 Y: -207, the party can find a long-forgotten stash of Lolth-Sworn Drow. From a locked chest the party can loot Drow Studded Leather Armour, and read the On Educating the Faithful tome by matron Tarrae of Menzoberranzan on the stone "desk" nearby, which earns the Secrets of the Matron Secrets of the Matron inspiration to party members with the Sage Sage background.
