Encounter details[edit | edit source]

Regular Encounter[edit | edit source]

Orin can be fought at the Bhaal Temple in the Undercity Ruins. For the fight, she will take the form of the Slayer (see Slayer for a list of its attacks). Orin will begin the fight with either 7 stacks of Unstoppable Unstoppable on Balanced difficulty or 12 stacks on Tactician difficulty. These stacks are refreshed by Boon of Bhaal at the end of every round, so long as at least 1 Reaper of Bhaal is still chanting.

The 6 Reapers of Bhaal start the battle with Sanctuary Sanctuary and will continually chant to activate Boon of Bhaal, which is represented by the giant skull over the Chamber's door. The Reapers of Bhaal do not directly participate in the fight until either Orin is defeated or their chanting is disrupted by conditions such as Prone Prone, Silenced Silenced, Hypnotised Hypnotised, Fearful Fearful, or Stunned Stunned.[note 2]

If knocked off the area, Orin will die. Her Netherstone-Pommelled Bloodthirst and Altar Key remain on the floor and are retrievable.

If Orin didn't kill her kidnapped victim during the dialogue before the fight, they will be trapped on an Altar in the center of the room. A successful DC 25 Sleight of Hand check to lockpick their chains will allow them to join the fight as a playable temporary companion with whatever stats and weapons they had upon their capture; the Altar Key can also be used if it was pickpocketed from Orin or looted from her corpse. (WARNING: If the freed victim is then downed or killed during the fight, they cannot be revived by Withers Withers or by casting Revivify Revivify, leaving them permanently dead and removed from the party as though Orin had killed them in the dialogue.)

Prior to the fight, if the party uses Speak with Dead Speak with Dead on Helena Anchev's corpse, which generally requires using the opening at the northeast end of the balcony in order to reach the Orin's bedroom before meeting Orin on the platform, they can discover that she betrayed Orin on Sarevok's orders. If you tell Orin this and then taunt her further by succeeding a DC 25 Deception check, DC 25 Persuasion check, or DC 25 Religion check, Orin will completely break down. Bhaal will then forcibly transform her into the Slayer Form, and give her the unique buff A Mist Most Scarlet A Mist Most Scarlet.

In Honour mode, she will have Legendary Action: Sanguine Lash Legendary Action: Sanguine Lash in her slayer form, allowing her to use Sanguine Lash Sanguine Lash as a reaction once per round, which she applies only against foes who use melee attacks against her. She will also have Legendary Resistance Legendary Resistance against being incapacitated. The Boon of Bhaal gains a legendary action Bhaal's Edict Bhaal's Edict - if Orin did not use her Sanguine Lash this turn (i.e. party and allies made no melee attacks against her), the Boon of Bhaal will force Bhaal's Edict upon one of your party members. If that party member is unable to kill another creature, they will die upon ending their turn. Death Ward Death Ward does protect party members from Bhaal's Edict, although in this case they lose all of their current buffs and conditions as if they'd briefly died.

Dark Urge Encounter (The Duel)[edit | edit source]

As the The Dark Urge The Dark Urge, the player will be able to agree to a duel against Orin. The duel will separate you from your companions. Orin will not be granted the Unstoppable Unstoppable feature during the duel and the Boon of Bhaal will not be active. Dying during the duel will not result in an immediate game over, but will impact the personal story of the Dark Urge. Your allies will then start fighting the normal version of the encounter against Orin and her cultists. While Orin will not heal any damage done to her in the duel, she will gain the Unstoppable Unstoppable feature she normally has.

Depending on your choices in Act 2, Orin will have different forms that you can fight against.

If you have been granted the Slayer form, then Orin will fight in her humanoid form. Note that when conversing before the fight, the Urge will have the opportunity to transform into the Slayer through dialogue. If this option is taken, they will be able to transform an additional time during combat (if the form is removed), rather than having to wait for a long rest. While in humanoid form, Orin will dual-wield Crimson Mischief and Bloodthirst. She will also gain one stack of Murderous Strikes Murderous Strikes per successful hit. After gaining five stacks of Murderous Strikes Murderous Strikes, she will lose all stacks and be able to use her Deathbringer's Assault Deathbringer's Assault to attack seven times. In Honour mode, Orin will use Deathbringer's Assault for her reaction with Murderous Retort when it becomes available.

If you do not have the Slayer Form, then Orin will fight in her Slayer form. Her version is different from your own slayer form as it does not function like a Wild Shape Wild Shape or Polymorph Polymorph - reducing her to 0 hit points will kill her. She will also not be able to use opportunity attacks as the slayer during the duel.

Tactics[edit | edit source]

This fight principally revolves around reducing Orin's many stacks of Unstoppable Unstoppable. To accomplish this there are two main strategies:

  1. By dealing enough separate instances of damage to burn through them all each turn and then applying substantial damage with subsequent attacks on the same turn. The easiest way to remove Unstoppable Unstoppable is to use spells with many instances of damage such as Magic Missile Magic Missile or Scorching Ray Scorching Ray. Magic Missile is particularly effective since it is guaranteed to hit and doesn't require a clear line of sight. Note that quirks of the initiative order can make accomplishing this more difficult than expected, e.g. if your Magic Missile caster goes last and your high damage party members go first. Thus you may want to go into this battle with flexible strategies, although the likelihood of initiative problems can be reduced by preparing with e.g. Elixir of Vigilance.
  2. By stopping all the Reapers of Bhaal from chanting, which stops her from refreshing her stacks each turn. The Reapers of Bhaal can't be directly targeted due to Sanctuary Sanctuary but can be killed with area-of-effect weapons and spells (e.g. Smokepowder Arrows, Fireball Fireball, Ice Storm Ice Storm) or disrupted from chanting with conditions such as Prone Prone, Silenced Silenced, Hypnotised Hypnotised, Fearful Fearful, or Stunned Stunned. They can also be knocked off the platform with e.g. Arrow of Roaring Thunder, Smokepowder Arrows, and spells like Thunderwave Thunderwave. Once all of the Reapers have been eliminated, Orin will no longer be able to refresh her stacks of Unstoppable Unstoppable, and any remaining ones can be removed through conventional attacks.

Alternatively, on lower difficulty levels the fight can be "cheesed" by knocking Orin off of the platform to instantly kill her.

WARNING: When playing on Honour Mode be aware that Orin's Sanguine Lash can knock back multiple party members, and if they are near the edge of the abyss this can lead to death.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. Despite its description, Sanguine Animation Sanguine Animation will consume corpses rather than blood surfaces in order to create Bloodmarrow Skeletons. Knocking enemies off the platform will leave less corpses for Orin to consume.
  2. Killing the Reapers of Bhaal before starting the fight with Orin (e.g. through stealth and long range archery) will prevent the Boon of Bhaal from being removed since they died before it entered the turn order. This will require the party to remove all of Orin's Unstoppable Unstoppable stacks each turn without having any way to stop the Boon of Bhaal.
  • Orin's Slayer form has higher stats than the version used by the Dark Urge.
  • While the player character needs to read Regarding the Slayer as the Dark Urge in order to use Piercing Growl Piercing Growl in their Slayer form, Orin's version automatically has that ability.
