An example of a shield

Shields are a type of Equipment that provide bonuses to characters' Armor Class and decreases chances of being hit by enemies.

Shields are always equipped in the character’s offhand.

Shield Proficiency

People who trained to fight while wielding shields can use them effectively in combat.

Wielding a shield without proficiency will impose Disadvantage on every Ability Check, Saving Throw, and attack roll, as well as cause you to be unable to cast Spells.
