The Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen is a story item in Baldur's Gate 3.

Where to find

Usage

  • A tadpole remains in a party member's inventory only until the Illithid Power skill tree is automatically unlocked, when the quest Embrace Your Potential Embrace Your Potential is started. After this, obtained tadples do not get in the inventory anymore but are added directly to the Illithid Power skill tree interface, where they can be used to unlock illithid powers.
  • The Illithid Power skill tree is also unlocked after recruiting Minthara Minthara, because she already makes use of illithid powers.

Notes

  • If, when picked up, a specimen is sent directly to a hireling's inventory, it remains there until sent to the inventory of a party member who has already been tadpoled.
  • After the first Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen is consumed, future parasites can be stolen in broad daylight. Even when a party member is caught stealing, the Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen is automatically consumed the before they can proved to have stolen it and the theft can be denied without any check.
  • It is possible to duplicate parasites received in Act One. To do this, all the parasites, which shall be duplicated must be collected before triggering the first cutscene with the dream visitor. Once that cutscene triggers, manually consuming a parasite from the inventory consumes all the parasites in the inventory, but fails to remove them. If the player character then moves these remaining parasites into a container, they are consumed a second time. (proof of bug after patch 8 https://youtu.be/bjRnmBh1LvI)
