When approached, Akabi will invite the player to participate and Spin the Wheel for 500 gold, loudly promoting the allure of winning the jackpot. Players that participate will only ever get one of the 16 largely useless consolation prizes, however.
Winning the Jackpot
A successful DC20 Perception check will reveal that Akabi is cheating, manipulating the wheel to ensure no one wins the jackpot.
He will deny any accusations, offering the player to simply spin again instead. If provoked, Akabi will shapeshift the player into a cheese wheel for 20 turns. Akabi will refuse to let anyone play who has been transformed by him in this way, but other characters can still participate.
Instead, Akabi will need to be pickpocketed (or traded) for his Djinni Ring, without which he cannot rig the game. However, doing this will permanently lock the player out of winning future consolation prizes.
After, paying 500 gold to play will result in the player winning the jackpot. Akabi will be enraged at the player having cheated, and transport the contestant far to the Jungle, in the distant land of Chult. If the player can survive, they'll find the legendary trident Nyrulna in a locked chest near the portal back to the circus.
Consolation Prizes
There are 16 possible consolation prizes from Akabi. Some have utility, but most are either useless or even harmful.
- The +1 Breastplate is just a normal Breastplate. The description text reveals it is simply named "+1 Breastplate."
- Bag of Moulding turns all inserted food into moldy and rotten versions.
- These can still be used as camp supplies and can be stacked with each other if the supply value is the same.
- Drinks are immune to this effect.
- Boots of Very Fast Blinking grants a per turn free casting of , a very powerful item, except the character will be stripped naked down to their underwear on every usage, the stripped articles of clothing will be left on the spot the user teleported from.
- The inventory, equipped accessories, weapons, and the Boots of Very Fast Blinking themselves are not affected, and will stay with the user.
- Comeback Handaxe, despite its description, does not return to the user at all when thrown. It is simply a Handaxe with a +1 enchantment.
- Eternal Carafe of Wine (Or Sometimes Acid) will inflict the Caustic Brine condition on its user, dealing damage.
- Reverse Rain Cloak makes the wearer Wet. This permanent condition causes them to be immune to Burning, resistant to fire damage, but vulnerable to cold and lightning damage.
- The player will also have their accumulated blood and dirt washed away upon equipping due to the Wet condition.
- Wavemother's Cloak is a lesser version of this item, giving an analogous set of elemental resistances only until damage is taken on a turn.
- Staff of a Mumbling Wizard, when equipped, gives the user a 100% hit chance cantrip. But it has a 10% chance of spawning a centered on the caster with every use of the cantrip. Pairs well with the Reverse Rain Cloak.
- Unlucky Thief's Gloves provides a +2 bonus to Sleight of Hand checks, and adds a piece of Charcoal to the wearer's inventory for each item they steal.
- While the description of this item intends for the charcoal to be a punishment, the player can sell them for a small profit.
The other possible prizes are all useless:
Notes
- Bards need not even steal or trade for the ring: with a successful check, they can distract Akabi with either a joke or a well-timed fart and win the jackpot. Akabi will accuse the player of cheating anyway.
- Akabi will permanently close down the game if the player attempts to play 17 times. In order to obtain everything, including the jackpot, one must have 8,500 gold in hand, spin the wheel normally 16 times, and on the 17th win the jackpot.
