If the player talks to Volo, he'll inevitably stumble. Gribbo will be upset that the player "broke" her pigeon, and bring him back to the Shattered Sanctum.
If the player wants to Rescue Volo, they'll have to persuade her to hand him over, or circumvent her somehow.
