BG3.wiki's Editing Policy is a set of guidelines for editors to follow when contributing to the wiki. These are a set of principles to apply when reasonable, rather than a list of hard rules that must always be followed.

What is wiki consensus?

Consensus is the end result of productive discussion. It is not the result of a vote or the most popular opinion, but rather the end result of productive discussion and debate regarding the best practices for the wiki.

A consensus is never permanent, complete or unquestionable, and may always change following new discussion.

Consensus should not be confused with convention – a way things are usually done on the wiki. Sometimes, the wiki convention may inform the consensus, whereas other times, a decision is reached that goes against current convention.

In the case of disputes and conflicts, it is always the goal to reach a consensus to improve the wiki, rather than to follow a list of arbitrary rules.

General principles

  1. Use straightforward, succinct language. Less is more.
  2. Always prioritise fixing factual errors over rewriting articles to conform to a specific style.
  3. Consult the Style Guide or Editing Policy when necessary. When the Style Guide is unable to provide guidance, follow current wiki convention.

Editing etiquette

  1. A single editor's personal preference or opinion about what goes on the wiki should not override all others.
  2. When making major edits, describe the nature of your edits by filling out the Summary field on the submission page
  3. In case of editing conflicts and disputes, or simple disagreements, start a discussion on the Discussion / Talk page or the bg3.wiki Discord.

Adding information

  1. Be bold and take initiative to add new content to articles.
  2. Do not be afraid to add incomplete information to the wiki. Incomplete edits can still be valuable. Do not create empty or near-empty articles.
  3. Articles are never considered complete – add additional information or perspectives to articles as needed.

Factuality and verification

  1. Always attempt to source information using the <ref></ref> tag. If an edit needs verification, add the {{verify}} template.
  2. Prioritise correcting factually incorrect information over removing it.
  3. Do not outright remove correct information that could be relevant to an article - rephrase and rework it.

Objectivity and neutrality

  1. Maintain objectivity when editing the wiki, to the extent it is reasonable.
  2. Maintain a neutral perspective on the wiki. Add multiple points of view when necessary to ensure articles are balanced.
  3. Speculative or interpretive information should always be stated to be as such, should be written using neutral language, and should only be supplementary to an article.

What to avoid

  1. Do not add skewed information to articles in pursuit of a specific point of view.
  2. Do not re-add information that was previously removed due to incorrect references or a lack of verification.
  3. Do not intentionally go against wiki consensus without discussion.
  4. Do not engage in hostile edits or behaviours, including resorting to personal attacks or insults.
  5. Do not plagiarise or add texts copied from other sources, such as other websites or forum posts. Only submit your own, original work.
