User:Llamageddon/Images (Notes)

This page is a rough (and partly subjective) analysis of any files in a format that the wiki will automatically display as an image of some sort.

Wiki Legacy

Image files would benefit from clear guidance for naming conventions. The early adoption of '_Icon' as an almost universal suffix is probably not fixable now without a risky, and probably undesirable, admin-powered mass renaming.

This means some thought needs to be put into naming things that are, and are not, explicitly "Icons" as used by the game, and allowing for the 5000+ files already using the '_Icon' suffix, regardless of this.

Game File Images

The following image names are in reference to game file labelling.

The vast majority of images from the game files consist of:

Tooltip Images

Large (380x380) images. Item Name Icon.png
  • Colloquially referred to as "faded" images
    • These have transparency applied to their lower half.
  • Used by game in tooltips for UI elements, including items.
  • Tooltip Images make up the bulk of the game files uploaded to wiki during EA.
  • Desirable for use on the wiki when emulating in-game tooltip windows, i.e. on Equipment Pages.

'Controller' Tooltip Images

Medium (144x144) images. Item Name Image.png
  • Colloquially referred to as "unfaded" images.
    • No transparency, and smaller than, but otherwise identical to, Tooltip images.
  • Used by the game in tooltips when playing with a controller.
  • Desirable for use on the wiki when a clear illustration of an element in question is wanted; i.e. a gallery of visual variations of an item.

Icons

Small (64x64) Icons. Item Name Item Icon.png
  • Practically all Tooltip images also have an Icon form.
    • Often stored by the game in 64x64 grid sprite sheets.
    • Sometimes visually distinct from tooltip images, some are unique.
  • Used by the game for UI elements.
  • Desirable for use on the wiki when presenting Icons...#
    • Alongside text (inline).
    • In bulleted lists.
    • For illustration or emulation of in-game UI elements.
