Olam[note 2] is a dead aasimar[1] Harper that can be found in the House of Healing Morgue. He attempted to lift the Shadow Curse more than a hundred years before the events of Act Two, until he eventually succumbed to the darkness.

History[edit | edit source]

Siege of Reithwin[edit | edit source]

When Ketheric Thorm amassed an army of Dark Justiciars to plunge the world into shadow at the behest of Shar, Olam was part of a combined forces of Harpers and druids from the Emerald Grove intent on stopping him. Though their crusade suffered setbacks and defeats at first, the combined might of the Harpers and druids, with the involvement of Yurgir and his merregons, eventually whittled down and destroyed the entire Dark Justiciar army. Ketheric Thorm was then finally killed in battle, sealed in Reithwin's Grand Mausoleum by the Harpers — but not before uttering his final curse.

The Harpers and druids were scattered when Ketheric's final words brought the Shadow Curse upon the surrounding lands, afflicting any survivors from the battle and all the town's remaining inhabitants.

Shadow Curse[edit | edit source]

Over the period of a few short days, the now-Shadow-Cursed Lands fell into darkness, causing harm to any who remained or ventured in it, and transforming into undead any who remained too long in its shade.

Olam survived the first few days, protected by his armour, while his fellow Harpers fell to the curse and rose as Shadows. He hid and set up traps, with the company of his familiar, Corvin.

On the fifth day, Olam set out to search for artefacts or scrolls in hopes of finding ways to ward off the Shadow Curse, as well as any other survivors. For the next weeks, his search leads him to finding books, scrolls, and artefacts, but none of them useful in protecting against the curse. Olam mentions hearing sounds from the House of Healing, but does not enter as the source of those were Shadow-Cursed Undead Shadow-Cursed Undead. Instead, he takes comfort in his familiar Corvin's presence, and attempts to remove the Shadow Curse through spellcraft,[2] though his research is inconclusive — his efforts instead culminate in him turning his gear into living armour.[note 3]

Eventually, on his third tenday in the Shadow Curse, Olam made his way into the House of Healing Morgue where he continued his research. During his last hours, he summoned his familiar Corvin for comfort and affection, despite the Shadow Curse tormenting the two of them. Olam would soon succumb to the Shadow Curse, leaving behind his journals and his Shadow-Animated Shadow-Animated armour behind.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. Despite being an Aasimar in lore, Olam's corpse is classified as a Human.
  2. While his corpse is simply referred to as "Dead Harper", the literature left around his place of death points to the fact that his actual name is Olam.
  3. His armour likely becomes the Hollow Armour found by descending into the pit at X: 45 Y: -936.
  • A unique robe called Bided Time can be found in a chest next to his corpse, it is unclear on whether or not it belonged to Olam or is related to his armour at all.
  • Olam's corpse is too damaged to be spoken to with Speak with Dead Speak with Dead.
  • Despite being Aasimar, Olam has no wings to speak of on his corpse.
    • As a working theory, it might be implied that Balthazar found and clipped the wings from Olam's corpse, and gave them to Fist Marcus to reinforce the latter's loyalty.
