Karlach was one of Zariels prized soldiers.
History
Zariel is a fallen angel. When she was still a Celestial, she was tasked with monitoring the Blood War. She took it upon herself to take action, and led an unsuccessful invasion of Avernus. She was defeated. [2]
She is credited with kiling a horde of Yeenoghu's Gnolls.[3],

- Zariel is the main antagonist of the game's prequel D&D Adventure
Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus. The adventure takes place 10 years prior to the beginning of Baldur's Gate 3. - A loading screen tooltip says "Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells, is ruled by Zariel - a fallen angel turned archdevil."
