Brought to the Shadowfell (which is a reflection of the world you're in, and a dark reflection too, rife with wickedness and twisted echoes and despair) by their Raven Queen, the shadar-kai are elves. Not elves as you might find along the Sword Coast, but elves that reflect their home with their physiology and attitude.
