Volo's Ersatz Eye image
Volo's Ersatz Eye is a story item that can be used to permanently increase a character's Charisma score by 1 and also permanently decrease Intelligence by 1.
Description Icon.png

A hollow bead of white glass, carefully painted to resemble a realistic eye. Its tarnished brass fittings hum with a tinge of magic.

Properties

Effect

  • While the ersatz eye is embedded in your eye socket, you can see through the tiny orb as though it were a normal eye. Can't be removed once inserted.
  • When used, the eye has the following Permanent effects:

Where to find

  • Can be pickpocketed from Volo in the Druid Grove (during first visit only).
  • Can also be pickpocketed from him later in the Goblin Camp, before resolving the Druid Grove/Goblin Camp conflict.
  • If Volo is alive during the celebration (after resolving the conflict), he can attempt to remove the player's tadpole via an experimental operation.
    • Needless to say - because Volo is a bumbling fool - this operation is unsuccessful and leaves the player character permanently blind in one eye and debuffed (-1 to Intelligence, Disadvantage Icon.png Disadvantage on Perception checks, and cannot make Critical Hits).
    • Volo gives you the ersatz eye (if not already pickpocketed from him), which will negate all the downsides of this debuff except the Intelligence reduction.
