Elminster Aumar, also referred to simply as Elminster, is a wizard NPC who appears in Baldur's Gate 3. He is the current Chosen of the Goddess Mystra, and plays a key recurring role in the story of Gale.
Gameplay
Interactions
Locations
Players are given a limited number of opportunities to interact with Elminster. The list below contains the situations currently known, but it may not be complete, and conditions may vary for Origin Gale vs. Companion Gale.
- If Gale has either been recruited or is in the player's party, Elminster first appears in the game world immediately prior to the start of Act Two, regardless of which path the player used to exit Act One.
- Elminster can first be found near the entrance to the Shadow-Cursed Lands from Rosymorn Monastery Trail or near the ruined Sharran temple if the party used the elevator from Grymforge, assuming Gale is still alive and has not left the party. Gale's personal quest The Wizard of Waterdeep must have progressed to the point where his condition is no longer responding to treatment for Elminster to appear. If Gale does not receive all three items by the time he reaches the Shadow-Cursed Lands, then Elminster appears in camp after a long rest once he has received the last item.
- If Gale survives into the events of Act Three, Elminster appears in the players Camp for a second time, after Gale's story quest has progressed to visit the vaults of Sorcerous Sundries.
Unique
- When first meeting Elminster, a player using the Bard class is given multiple unique dialogue options.
- If Karlach is a companion, and is spoken to after Elminster first departs the camp, she will ask if Elminster is "Gale's Grandpa" and has additional dialogue depending on how the player responds.

Trivia
- Elminster is voiced by Crispin Redman, replacing Frank Welker from previous games.
- Elminster's race is human, though when examined, his character sheet displays him as being a Level 1 construct. It's possible that the Elminster we meet in the game is a copy or a simulacrum of the real wizard.
- "Behold! Elminster's ball-bag." is a possible voice line for attacking an elemental with Vicious Mockery.
- During Act 3 dialogue, Gale describes Elminster as being "thirteen centuries old."[1]
- Elminster can be attacked under certain circumstances, and uses at least the spells of Sunbeam and Slow. If he reaches 0 hit points, he will teleport out of camp rather than leave a corpse behind.
