Attack Rolls are rolls that determine whether an attack hits a target. When making an attack roll, roll a d20 and add appropriate modifiers (Ability Scores Modifier, Proficiency Bonus).
The attacker succeeds if the total results matches or exceeds the target's Armour Class.
Attack Roll Modifiers
- The common modifiers for making attack rolls with melee or ranged weapons are Strength (Melee) and Dexterity (Ranged).
- Some spells require attack rolls and the modifiers added are determined by the spellcasters' spellcasting ability
- Wisdom for Cleric, Druid, Ranger
- Intelligence for Wizard, Arcane Trickster (Rogue), Eldritch Knight (Fighter)
- Charisma for Bard, Paladin, Warlock, Sorcerer
- Proficiency Bonuses are added when making an attack rolls with weapons or spells.
- Rolling 1 on an attack roll always misses the target, regardless of any modifiers that the attacker has.
- Rolling 20 on an attack roll always hits the target, ignoring the target's Armour Class.
