Upcasting refers to when a spellcaster chooses to use a higher level spell slot to cast a lower level spell. Many spells gain additional damage dice, a larger area of effect, allow for more targets, or other effects when upcast, but some spells gain no additional benefit other than the fact they are treated as a higher level spell.
