Brought to the Shadowfell (which is a reflection of the world you're in, and a dark reflection too, rife with wickedness and twisted echoes and despair) by their Raven Queen, the shadar-kai are elves. Not elves as you might find along the Sword Coast, but elves that reflect their home with their physiology and attitude. On the whole they are cruel, nasty-minded people who are nonetheless singularly devoted to their Queen and her domain of power.
