Romance is an optional feature in Baldur's Gate 3. The player can start a romantic relationship with several different characters, be it a brief fling or long-term.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Some relationships can find their peak in sexual scenes, while others will follow different paths. Characters can show interest in the player character regardless of race and gender. More significant relationships will occur only with Companions. Romance is available in multiplayer, but player characters will not be able to start a romance with each other. All romances are available to any Custom and Origin player characters and some Origin player characters have unique dialogue options during romance.

It is possible to be in a relationship with any of the Origin companions, as well as Halsin or Minthara. While Shadowheart, Astarion and Karlach may permit the player character to add Halsin (if asked), other characters will not consent to being in a committed polyamorous relationship. Although a player character can initiate romance with up to two origin companions, only one can be maintained in later stages; one of the origin companions will eventually force the PC to choose between them. Though they may mention the idea with certain conversations, companions will not initiate any polyamory on their own with other companions.

Normally, a player character may initiate the beginning stages of romance with up to two origin companions only. However, with the Tiefling victory party after saving the Emerald Grove in Act One, it is possible to add Karlach as a third beginning romance. The first two romances must be started before long resting and the night celebration begins, but can be done on the same "day", and even right after each other. If one wants Shadowheart to be included in this trio of budding romances, the player character must start with her first. After the first two, when the night celebration starts, the player character may approach Karlach and agree to meet with her later in the evening; queued beginning romance scenes (and their progressions) with the other two origin companions will still proceed with subsequent long rests.

While the player character is in a relationship with one or more companions and is traveling (or has just left camp) they may hear other party members comment or banter on the relationship in some way, if the romanced companion is present. These conversations can be interesting and/or amusing to listen to. The content of these conversations will vary depending on the makeup of the party, the events that have transpired and the companion being romanced. Also, while in camp, conversations with other companions may adjust if the player character is in a relationship, and as it progresses.

There are also some sexual encounters the player character can initiate with characters who are not companions.

Romance options[edit | edit source]

Origin companions[edit | edit source]

Non-Origin Companions[edit | edit source]

Other Characters[edit | edit source]

Aside from the fully romanceable characters, there are several options for one-night stands. They have no romance progression and are one time events.

Companion romance[edit | edit source]

Astarion[edit | edit source]

Gale[edit | edit source]

Halsin[edit | edit source]

Karlach[edit | edit source]

Lae'zel[edit | edit source]

Minthara[edit | edit source]

Shadowheart[edit | edit source]

Wyll[edit | edit source]

Non-companions[edit | edit source]

Haarlep[edit | edit source]

Main article: Haarlep's romance

Haarlep is an incubus under the employ of Raphael Raphael. They can be found in the House of Hope during Act Three. Approaching them will trigger a conversation where the player character can sleep with them, however, this is not without its consequences.

Sorn and Nym Orlith[edit | edit source]

Main articles: Nym Orlith and Sorn Orlith

Nym and Sorn Orlith are twins and courtesans at Sharess' Caress, a brothel just outside Baldur's Gate. The player character can pay 500 gold to sleep with one of them, though their solo services are only available if a romanced companion is in the party. If the player character has a romanced companion(s) in the party, the twins will offer to both sleep with the player character and their partner(s) for 1000 gold instead. However, most companions will refuse until their personal quests have been completed, save Karlach, who always refuses.

To sleep with them, any party members not involved must be sent to camp or at least ungrouped from the main character before initiating the scene. This scene is not animated, and takes place in the dark.

Nym and Sorn's services are also a potential reward for completing the quest Find the 'Stern Librarian' Ffion.

Mizora[edit | edit source]

Main article: Mizora's romance

Player characters can engage in a one-night stand with Mizora during Act Three, only if Wyll is in the party. If the player character is romancing Gale, Lae'zel, Wyll or Minthara, they will end the relationship.

Naoise[edit | edit source]

Main article: Naoise

Naoise is a courtesan working at Sharess's Caress in Wyrm's Crossing. She can be found on the third floor in her room, Nymph's Grotto.

The Emperor[edit | edit source]

Main article: The Emperor's romance

After completing the quest Visit the Emperor's Old Hideout, the Emperor will have a conversation with the player character during a long rest. As long as the player character is receptive to the Emperor's advances, conclusions to this scene will allow the player character to engage in more intimate activities with it.

Inter-character relationships[edit | edit source]

After dealing with the Goblin-Druid Grove conflict in Act One, if the player does not spend the night with Lae'zel she will do so with either Astarion or Wyll - as long as they are still in the camp.

Dark Urge specific scenes[edit | edit source]

The following scenes are only available if the The Dark Urge is chosen as origin character.

  • It is possible to snap Minthara's neck after having sex with her in Act 1.
  • If not killing Isobel Thorm Isobel before dealing with Ketheric Thorm Ketheric Thorm, then Sceleritas Fel Sceleritas Fel will try to force the player character to kill their love interest. If not waking up the love interest, they will be dead in the morning.
