The wastes of Avernus

Avernus is the first layer of the Nine Hells, in both the setting of Baldur's Gate 3, as well as the Forgotten Realms universe the game sources its setting from.

Trundling, mashing, mincing, crushing, grinding, blasting, biting! Hear their peeling thunder, their roaring flames, their clicking, whirring, metallic melody, and know that the hellfire engines of Avernus are on the move!
Edict in Elturel

Overview

Avernus is ruled by Archduke Zariel Zariel. Avernus has been the primary battleground of the Blood War, the war between the Demons of the Abyss, and the Devils of the Nine Hells.

During the Prologue sequence of Baldur's Gate 3, the player character technically starts the game in Avernus because by the time the player character awakes, the Nautiloid ship they are on is travelling through that plane. Parts of the Avernus landscape can be seen through specific "openings" in the ship walls.

Later on, in Act Three the party can travel to Raphael Raphael's home in Avernus, the House of Hope.

Notes

  • The mastersmith of Avernus, Carixim, who is called the soul-stuffed forgemaster of hellish Avernus, is another well-known being in Avernus. He is mentioned by Dammon Dammon: When I found Carixim, he turned to me, with all those poor people's souls crammed into him, and he... he grinned at me. He said, "I been expecting you, boy". When Elturel was forced down in the hells, Dammon worked under Carixim and learned from him how to forge infernal iron and how to use infernal machinery. Carixim himself forged the Helldusk armour set and the he also created the Steelwatcher Helmet.
