Companions are characters in Baldur's Gate 3 who can join the player in the adventure throughout Faerûn. All companions can be Origin characters as well and their recruitment is optional. The player can start a romantic relationship with any companion, regardless of race or gender.
There are also temporary companions in-game. These characters can join the player’s party during a specific time or moments of the game and can sometimes be playable characters.
As of Patch 6, there are five companions available for recruitment.
Unlike Camp Followers, these can follow you throughout your adventure and have a wider range of interactions.

Recruitment Locations
Astarion: At the Ravaged Beach, continuing in the same path you fought the Intellect devourers.
Gale: At the Ravaged Beach, after trying to interact with a Teleportation Rune close to the Nautiloid.
Lae'zel: You'll first encounter her at the Nautiloid and then at the Ravaged Beach, close to Secluded Grove. She is being held hostage by tieflings.
Shadowheart: She'll join you if you free her on the Nautiloid, and will later be unconscious close to the place your player landed. If not freed from the Nautiloid, she'll be at the entrance of the Dank Crypt nearby. If not recruited on the Nautiloid or the Dank Crypt, she'll be found inside the Secluded Grove. If ignored again, you'll encounter her either at the Goblin Camp or at the Mountain Pass.
Wyll: Inside the Secluded Grove, training young tieflings.
